What is Crestor?
Crestor (rosuvastatin) is a member of the drug class of statins, used to treat hypercholesterolemia and related conditions, and to prevent cardiovascular disease. Along with diet, Crestor lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and raises HDL (good) cholesterol. It's also been proven to slow the progression of atherosclerosis (the buildup of plaque in your arteries over time).
How does Crestor work?
The liver makes most of your body's cholesterol. Crestor works by blocking an enzyme in the liver, thus limiting cholesterol production and lowering the amount of total cholesterol that ends up in the bloodstream. Crestor can lower LDL cholesterol up to 52% (at the 10-mg dose versus 7% with placebo). It can also increase the amount of HDL cholesterol in the blood by up to 14% (at the 10-mg dose versus 3% with placebo). Read more about statins...
Who can take Crestor?
Crestor is used for preventing and treating atherosclerosis that causes chest pain, heart attacks, strokes in individuals who have or are at risk for atherosclerosis.
Risk factors for atherosclerosis include:
- Abnormally elevated cholesterol levels
- A family history of heart attacks (particularly at a young age)
- Increasing age
- Diabetes.
Do not take Crestor if you
- Have previously had an allergic reaction to Crestor
- Currently have liver disease or liver problems
- Are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, or are planning to become pregnant. Crestor may harm your unborn baby. If you become pregnant while taking Crestor, stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away
- Are breast feeding. Crestor can pass into your breast milk and may harm your baby
As with other statin medicines, there is a chance of having a drug interaction while taking Crestor if you are also taking other medicines. Be sure to tell the doctor if you are taking any prescription medications. While you are taking Crestor don't start taking any medicines without checking with your doctor first
Does Crestor have any side effects?
As with all prescription medication, Crestor may cause side effects in some people. The most common include:
- Headache
- Muscle pain
- Abdominal pain
- Weakness
- Nausea
If you develop any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness at any time during treatment (especially if you also have a fever or feel ill), call your doctor right away, as these symptoms could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect.
What is the correct dosage?
The dose range for Crestor is 5 - 40 mg orally once daily. Crestor can be administered as a single dose at any time of the day with or withot food

How can I buy Crestor legally?
There are currently 5 statins approved for use in the UK. NHS guidlines currently only prescribe Crestor to patients showing signs of raised cholesterol (and even then, the NHS tend to favour the cheaper statins). A new international trial has shown that Crestor might benefit people with cholesterol levels lower than are currently being treated. Therefore, Crestor can be prescribed irrespective of high cholesterol levels as a preventive measure
Although most GPs are sympathetic, they are bound by NHS dispensing rules designed to protect the NHS drugs budget. One option is to ask your GP for a private prescription. Many will be happy to do so but expect to pay a doctor’s consultation fee on top of the cost of the (unsubsidised) treatment.
With Firstmed, our service is different: you get all the benefits of a private doctor including free postage and packing, Royal Mail Special Next Day Delivery from our NHS pharmacy (in plain, discreet packaging) and no consultation fee. Our online business model means we can work out considerably cheaper than a “bricks and mortar” equivalent without the inconvenience or potential embarrassment of having to see a doctor in person.
