What is Hay Fever?
Hay Fever is a type of allergy. An allergy is an immunological disorder, where your immune system is hypersensitive to one or several substances, that are known in that case as allergens. When the body is exposed to these substances, it responds with an allergic reaction. Those reactions can vary, but for hay fever it generally presents itself as sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, or watery eyes.
Hay fever, known medically as “allergic rhinitis” is usually a seasonal condition and is triggered by the inhalation of certain plant pollens. For most sufferers, the symptoms are mild and can be tolerated but for some people, hayfever can cause severe problems which can prevent them from working or concentrating.
What are the symptoms of hay fever?
The symptoms of hay fever may vary. Some people may have only one area affected, while others have a combination where the eyes and nose are both affected. The most common symptoms are:
- an itchy or runny nose
- sneezing
- itchy or watery eyes
- nasal congestion
