Genital Herpes Home Testing
Genital herpes (a common sexually transmitted infection in the UK) is caused by a virus called herpes simplex. Genital herpes is similar to the virus that leads to cold sores but it causes painful sores on and around your genitals. There is no known cure but treatments do exist that relief discomfort and speed up the healing process.
Herpes Information
Herpes enters the body through small cracks in the skin or through the moist soft lining of the mouth, vagina, rectum and urethra.
Herpes symptoms can happen within four to five days of coming into contact with the virus, but sometimes it can be weeks, months or even years before they appear. The first occurence of symptoms is usually the most severe. Repeated infections are usually not as bad. The sores are fewer, smaller, and less painful and heal more quickly.
If you get symptoms, you may experience the following:
Flu-like symptoms such as fever, tiredness, headache, swollen glands, aches and pains in the lower back, down the legs or in the groin.
Stinging, tingling or itching in the genital or anal area
Small, fluid-filled blisters anywhere in the genital or anal area, on the buttocks and tops of the thighs; these burst within a day or two leaving small red sores, which can be very painful.
Pain when urinating (caused by urine touching the sores).
Herpes Test
FirstMed provides a convenient way to get tested and treated for Genital Herpes. The test is a simple urine based test, with results normally ready within two to three working days of your sample arriving at the laboratory.
If you test positive we will provide you with an appropriate treatment free of charge.

Herpes Treatment
There is no cure for genital herpes, however, there are treatments available that may reduce the discomfort of a herpes outbreak and speed up the healing process.
Firstmed supplies two anti viral medicines for the treatment of Herpes - Aciclovir and Valaciclovir
There also some simple things you can do to relieve pain or discomfort. These include:
- Apply cold, wet tea bags or a wrapped ice pack to the sores (don't put ice directly on your skin).
- Have cool showers.
- Apply local anaesthetic ointment, such as lidocaine.
- Bath in warm, salted water.
- Drink lots of fluids.
