Is Generic viagra same as viagra

Question:
Is generic viagra exactly the same as genuine viagra? How can you tell the difference?

Answer:
To all intents and purposes, they are the same but it is not completely straightforward. Genuine branded viagra is only manufactured by Pfizer. Pfizer own the brand name and no-one else is allowed to use it. The active ingredient in viagra is called sildenafil citrate. For the past year, Pfizer's viagra patent has been running out and Europe is one of the last territories where they still enjoy patent protection. From July 8th 2013, the patent expires and UK pharmacies will be able to stock and supply generic versions of viagra. In terms of effect, there is no difference at all as the active ingredient is exactly same, the pill dosages are the same. The branding is not. Only Pfizer can carry Viagra branding.

Extra Information Related to this Q&A
The confusion with generic viagra lies in the fact that for many years, manufacturers in India, China and Mexico have been producing generic copies of viagra in breach of Pfizer's patent. The Indian government only recently has reaffirmed its right to copy western drugs on the basis that they should be available to their population at a price that is affordable. The problem has been that there is little or no control over the supply chain and consequently it has always been possible to obtain Indian produced viagra online through websites based outside the jurisdiction of the UK. Whilst this has meant very cheap viagra online, the concern is one can never be certain about the quality of the supply. These websites can obtain supplies direct from the factory without any controls. Since they do not employ doctors or pharmacists to prescibe and supply the treatment, effectively they are beyond control and can simply up sticks and leave if they get caught. In our opinion, it is a risk buying generic viagra online unless the company supplying you is UK based and registered with the Care Quality Commission in which case you can have full confidence in the safety of the supply chain. In addition there are certain things to look out for. All genuine medication manufacturers are required to account for every pill they produce and distribute so you will find a batch code on each packet. This batch code can be cross checked with the manufacturer to ensure its authenticity. If you are worried you might have bought something fake or at worst harmful to you, another good tip is to crush the tablet; if it crumbles softly, it is likely to be a fake pill. Of course the pills should also be in a blister pack rather than loose in a bag. if in doubt, one resort is to send the sample off tto the MHRA, the Uk authority responsible for ensuring that fake treatments do not get into the supply chain.
