Trimethoprim - antibiotics for the treatment of Cystitis
For Cystitis Treatments & Prices
What is Trimethoprim?
Trimethoprim is an antibiotic treatment used to treat bacterial infections. It is particularly effective against bacterial bladder infections.
How does Trimethoprim work?
Trimethoprim prevents bacteria from reproducing and growing. This action limits the spread of infection, and allows the body’s own natural defences to fight back.
How well does Trimethoprim work?
Trimethoprim antibiotics are 90% effective against bacterial bladder infections such as Cystitis. The medications work best when taken at regular intervals, normally twice daily (once in the morning, once in the evening).
To maximise drug effectiveness you must take the medicines as instructed by your doctor, and you should continue to take the medicine until you have completed the full prescribed course.
.
What is the correct dosage?
Your doctor will prescribe to you based on the severity of infection, and this may affect the number of days you need to take the treatment. You should take Trimethoprim as instructed by your medical practitioner. To avoid stomach upset it is best to take with food.
How soon after starting Trimethoprim should I expect symptoms to clear up?
Symptoms of Cystitis should begin to clear up within 24 hours of starting treatment and should disappear completely by day 3. Continue to take medicines as advised by your doctor, even if your symptoms disappear before the course is due to end. If you stop treatment too early infection could come back.
Contact your doctor if despite completing treatment your symptoms persist or indeed worsen.
What are the side effects of Trimethoprim?
Antibiotics kill bacteria, but cannot discriminate between good and bad bacterial. This can lead to stomach upset during treatment; it is therefore recommended you also take a course probiotic. Probiotics are sold in tablet form in your local pharmacy, or in yoghurts in most supermarkets.
Is there any reason why I shouldn't take Trimethoprim?
You should not use trimethoprim unless directed by your doctor. Trimethoprim is designed to treat certain bacterial infections only and has no effectiveness against viral infections. Using this treatment unnecessarily can lead to future resistance to treatment.
